Trước tiên, chúng ta hãy đi tìm hiểu về khái niệm, cấu trúc và cách sử dụng điểm ngữ pháp này.

1.1 In order to là gì

Cấu trúc in order to được sử dụng như một liên từ nhằm để thể hiện mục đích hoặc lý do trong câu nói.

Nghĩa: để mà, để, nhằm.

1.2. Cấu trúc in order to

Khẳng định:

S + V + O + in order to + V (infinitive)

S + V + O + in order for O to + V (infinitive)

Ex:

  1. He listened thoroughly in order to understand the play.: (Anh ấy đã lắng nghe kỹ lưỡng để hiểu được vở kịch.)
  2. I worked a lot in order to improve my skills.: (Tôi đã làm việc rất nhiều để cải thiện kỹ năng của mình.)
  3. My father works hard in order for me to have a better life: (Cha tôi làm việc chăm chỉ để tôi có cuộc sống tốt hơn)

Phủ định:

S + V + O + in order not to + V (infinitive)

S + V + O + in order for O not to + V (infinitive)

Ex:

  1.  I must sell my computer in order not to play the game.: (Tôi phải bán máy tính của mình để không chơi trò chơi.)
  2. You shouldn’t stay up late in order not to go to school late.: (Bạn không nên thức khuya để không đi học muộn.)
  3. He presses the button in order for the radio not to work.: (Anh ấy nhấn nút để cái đài không hoạt động.)

2. Cách dùng in order to

Trong ngữ pháp, cấu trúc này khá đơn giản để sử dụng. Tuy nhiên, bạn vẫn cần lưu ý những điều dưới đây để đảm bảo không gây ra bất kỳ sai sót nào.

Chỉ dùng in order to nối 2 câu khi có cùng 1 chủ ngữ.

Ex:

  1. We go to the cinema. We watch the latest film.

=> We go to the cinema in order to watch the latest film.

  1. I will save money. I buy a new dress.

=> I will save money in order to buy a new dress.

Những động từ: hope, like, want to sẽ lượt bỏ và chia V chính sau chúng.

 

Ex:

  1. I put on my coat. I want to go out.
    1. => I put on my coat in order to go out.
  2. She’s studying hard because she hopes to become a teacher.
    1. => She’s studying hard in order to become a teacher.

3. Các cấu trúc tương đương với in order to

Bên cạnh cấu trúc in order to mình vừa giới thiệu thì còn nhiều cấu trúc khác cũng chỉ mục đích. Đó là: so as to, so that, in order that, to V, …Để hiểu rõ hơn về các cấu trúc này, ta cùng xem phần tiếp theo bên dưới nhé.

3.1 So as to

Đây được xem là cấu trúc có cách dùng, ý nghĩa giống với in order to. Vậy nên, bạn chỉ cần học thuộc những điều ở trên và áp dụng trực tiếp cho cấu trúc so as to này là được nha.

Ex:

  1. She is painting her house so as to prepare for Tet.: (Cô đang sơn nhà để chuẩn bị đón Tết.)
  2. I usually go to the guitar club so as not to stay home on weekends.: (Tôi thường đến câu lạc bộ guitar để không phải ở nhà vào cuối tuần.)

3.2 Cấu trúc “to V”

Khi muốn thể hiện ý nghĩa mục đích thì cấu trúc to V là dạng dễ sử dụng nhất. Nó mang nghĩa tương tự với in order to + V.

S + V + to V

Ex:

  1. I bought a new camera to take photos for the next trip.: (Tôi mua một chiếc máy ảnh mới để chụp ảnh trong chuyến đi tới.)
  2. I usually go jogging to keep in good shape.: (Tôi thường chạy bộ để giữ vóc dáng cân đối.)

Tuy nhiên, chúng ta không dùng “not to V” khi muốn nói tới ý nghĩa phủ định.

3.3 So that

Khi không muốn dùng in order to hay so as to, bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc so that. Điểm khác biệt là cấu trúc này sẽ đi với mệnh đề (clause) thay vì động từ.

Ta sẽ kết hợp thêm các động từ modal verbs như: will, would, can, could trong mệnh đề đó.

Công thức:

S + V + so that S + will/would (can/could) + (not) + V.

Ex:

  1. He studies hard so that he can pass the next exam.: (Anh ấy học tập chăm chỉ để có thể vượt qua kỳ thi tiếp theo.)

3.4 With an aim of V-ing,…

Tương tự, cấu trúc with an aim of cũng được theo sau bởi V-ing. Nhưng bạn hãy nhớ kỹ giới từ đi kèm của chúng để không bị nhầm lẫn nha.

Ex:

  1. With an aim of enhancing my listening, I watch a lot of English movies.: (Với mục đích nâng cao khả năng nghe của mình, tôi xem rất nhiều phim tiếng Anh.)

3.5 With a view to V-ing,…

Cấu trúc này thường ít gặp hơn vì nó là cấu trúc nâng cao. Những bạn cũng hãy ghi nhớ, nó sẽ giúp ít cho bài thi viết của bạn đấy.
